Butler published two cloud chamber photographs of cosmic-ray events, providing the ﬁrst evidence of the existence of the K meson. Unlike the pion, whose existence had been predicted by Yukawa in 1935 to provide the force necessary to bind protons and neutrons together, the appearance of the K meson was entirely unexpected.
