She argues that pornography is not just an “idea,” because actual women must be used to produce it: 30 A Feminist Critique of Liberalism [I]t should be observed that it is the pornography industry, not the ideas in the materials, that forces, threatens, blackmails, pressures, tricks, and cajoles women into sex for pictures. In pornography, women are gang raped so they can be filmed. They are not gang raped by the idea of a gang rape. It is for pornography, and not by the ideas in it, that women are hurt and penetrated, tied and gagged, undressed and genitally spread and sprayed with lacquer and water so pictures can be made.

Thus, to reward someone’s “superior industry,” we first must know that we are rewarding something for which this individual is actually responsible and not something that he was able to achieve because of his position in an unjust social structure—for example, by profiting from the exploitation of others or by benefiting from a privileged upbringing. Because Dworkin fails to address this matter, his theory seems to operate as if the differences that people end up exhibiting are actually caused by factors that arise out of their individual personalities and ambitions and not out of their circumstances.

In other words, why not simply use existing laws to prosecute those who rape, coerce, and abuse the women who are used in the making of pornography? The problem with this approach is that it is unlikely to succeed. On MacKinnon’s analysis, one of the main functions of pornography is to portray women as enjoying their own violation and as desiring their own subjection to men’s sexual demands. This makes it extremely difficult for the women who work in pornography to prove that they were not simply consenting to “rough sex,” since it is their job to appear as if they really do enjoy similar acts when they are being filmed.
