Wavell himself visited Platt at Keren on 25 March to help with the tactical planning. Wavell wrote, ‘As soon as I had a good look at the position, I said to Platt that it looked to me as if the way through was straight up the main road, neglecting the high peaks to north and south’. The suggestion was implemented and the attack succeeded, with Keren falling to the British on 27 March. The victory at Keren enabled Wavell to continue to juggle his forces strategically from one corner of his theatre to another, with the 4th Indian Division being rapidly redeployed to North Africa.

This brigade is also originally intended to fly into Piccadilly, but with Calvert’s men now diverted to Broadway, the 111th Brigade now has to land at Chowringhee from where it will cross the Irrawaddy to march north to rendezvous with two of the other battalions landing at Broadway. 3. 16th Brigade under Brigadier Fergusson is the only Special Force brigade to march into Burma.
