At 1 year, John does something naughty and then looks to see if his mother noticed. John is aware of consequences, but only after he has acted. At a year and a half, John first looks at his mother, sees that she is looking at him – and then he does the naughty thing.

The ‘terrible twos’ are a delightful period when children are filled with wonder – and anxiety.
