Enrico Fermi nacque a Roma il 29 settembre 1901 e fu allievo della Scuola Normale di Pisa, dove 3i laureò nel1922. Fu poi a Gottingen, Roma, Leiden, Firenze e dal1926 di nuovo a Roma, titolare della cattedra di fisica teorica. Qui, con Franco Rasetti e con gli allievi Edoardo Amaldi, Bruno Pontecorvo ed Emilio Segrè avviò le ricerche sul rallentamento dei neutroni che gli fecero conseguire il premio Nobel nel1938.
